  • The Goal: To help you articulate your ADHD challenges clearly during your DWP workplace assessment.
  • The Golden Rule: Don’t just list symptoms; describe the functional barriers you face at work.
  • The Result: Securing the funding for coaching, tech, and software you are entitled to.

What to Ask For (The “Support Menu”)

The DWP won’t always tell you what is available. You should be prepared to suggest these specialised supports:

  • Specialist ADHD Strategy Coaching: Request 12–20 sessions to develop bespoke coping strategies for time management and organisation.
  • Assistive Technology: Request noise-cancelling hardware and “Focus” software (e.g., Brain.fm or speech-to-text tools).
  • Awareness Training: Request neurodiversity training for your manager to ensure they understand how to communicate with you effectively.

The “Worst Day” Principle

When the assessor asks how you manage, do not tell them how you “cope” on a good day. Describe how ADHD impacts you on your most difficult, overwhelmed day. This ensures the support granted is sufficient for your actual needs.

Speak “DWP-Speak” with confidence

The difference between an approved grant and a rejection is often how you phrase your needs. Download our Prep Sheet, featuring a “Trait-to-Impact” translation table and a pre-written script to read during your call.
